A painting of Eleven Pipers Piping

“Eleven Pipers Piping” is the eleventh painting in the series celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas!   This painting is acrylic on canvas panel and 5″x7″.

What is a Piper?

  • A pipe is a tubular wind instrument; a piper is a person who plays this instrument.
  • There are many different types of pipes – tabor pipe, flageolet, shepard’s pipe, hornpipe, and reed pipe to name a few.  Modern day tinwhistles, flutes and recorders are also pipes.
  • It is suspected that the tabor pipe is the instrument that is referred to in the song as it was popular in England during the Medieval period.
  • There is a lot of variation in the order of the gifts during the last four verses of the song – I’ve heard before that the average number of pieces of information that a person can remember is seven (I guess it would make sense that things would get a little fuzzy by the time you get through so many different gifts).
What is your favorite instrument to play?  How about to listen to someone else playing?
