On the Eleventh Day of Christmas, My True Love Gave to Me…
What is a Piper?
- A pipe is a tubular wind instrument; a piper is a person who plays this instrument.
- There are many different types of pipes – tabor pipe, flageolet, shepard’s pipe, hornpipe, and reed pipe to name a few. Modern day tinwhistles, flutes and recorders are also pipes.
- It is suspected that the tabor pipe is the instrument that is referred to in the song as it was popular in England during the Medieval period.
- There is a lot of variation in the order of the gifts during the last four verses of the song – I’ve heard before that the average number of pieces of information that a person can remember is seven (I guess it would make sense that things would get a little fuzzy by the time you get through so many different gifts).
