Art Fieldtrip – Arnot Art Museum

Last weekend I took a trip to our local art museum – Arnot Art Museum.   The building used to be the home of the Arnot family who played a large part in the development of the city of Elmira.  This is the family that owned Chemung Canal Bank, Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital, Chemung County Gas Co., and  Geneva and Watkins Steamboat Company.

The first room of the museum is the Arnot Collection.  The room has been restored to as close as possible to what it would have looked like when Matthias Arnot lived there and accumulated his collection.  The collection is intact with the original pieces of art collected by Arnot himself.  The room features a glass skylight which is unique in that it means that the art can be viewed in natural light and can vary depending on the weather conditions.

Right now in other parts of the museum local artists are featured in the Gallery Gala Homecoming Exhibition.   It’s so neat to see art from artists I’ve met throughout the museum.  It’s a beautiful exhibit and the work is currently up for auction.  There is also an exhibit upstairs from the Hudson River School.

If you follow along on my Facebook or Instagram page, you probably saw last month that I mentioned that I was invited to exhibit my art at the Arnot Art Museum for the Holiday Art Market.  There is a beautiful display in the room to the left as you enter the museum.  It’s so exciting to see my art in this prestigious location.  The paintings that I chose for this show feature scenes from Elmira and the surrounding area.  The Holiday Art Market will be on display until January 2nd and all pieces are for sale.   Be sure to stop by for a visit if you’re around the area!
