Photo of Laura Jaen Smith. Headshot in teal dress before solo exhibition

Hi and welcome!  I’m Laura, the artist and owner behind Laura Jaen Art.  I live in the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York (the Southern Tier region if we’re being technical)

A lot of my inspiration comes from observing the beauty I see around me.  I think one of the coolest things about being an artist is being able to see something that seems ordinary or unnoticed and bring it to life through art.  It feels almost like a superpower to be able to find the beauty in anything.

Most of my artwork is in acrylic.  I like the versatility of the medium and how fast it dries.  I also like to experiment with different mediums and techniques to learn new skills.  I strive to always being learning and growing as an artist and as a person.

One way that I use creating in my life, is to help learn more about the world around me.  I’m constantly observing and focusing in on the little details.  I usually stop and take photos on my phone anytime I come across something that catches my interest.  Later I use those photos as reference to create new paintings.  I also like to research more about the subject and then share what I find on my blog.

Beliefs & Values

Kindness and fairness towards all people, animals, and our environment.
Minimizing my impact on the environment through the way I live and work.
Constantly being in a state of learning and growth, and helping others around me to do the same.
Always seeking to find the beauty that’s present around me.
