2018 Summer Mosaic Mid-Project Update

Time just flies sometimes.  Last time I wrote to you I had mentioned that I was going on a trip for the week.  I was down in Orlando and had a wonderful time with new friends, learning, and having fun.  Since I’ve gotten back in town I’ve been busy busy with finding new waterfalls and painting up a storm.

I was able to finish up painting 8 and 9 before I left.

New Waterfalls Visited

Waterfalls that I’ve visited since the last time we talked:

·         Ithaca Gorge – 6 falls

·         Cascadilla Gorge – 2 named, 9 total

·         Fillmore Glen – Seven Bridge Falls

·         Carpenter Falls

·         Bucktail Falls

·         Tinker Falls

·         Pratt’s Falls

·         Stockbridge Falls

·         Watkins Glen State Park

Today’s adventure was Watkins Glen State Park.  It was a perfect day to hike waterfalls as it was National Hike with a Geek Day and Waterfall Wednesday.  I definitely made sure that I celebrated this holiday today.

As I was parking it began to sprinkle a little bit but once I got into the gorge it either stopped or the rock walls blocked the rain.  There’s a couple benefits of visiting this gorge on an overcast weekday.  The first would be that there’s less people.  This gorge is one of the most popular in the area and gets a lot of traffic especially on the weekends during the summer.  It was a little busy today towards the beginning on the gorge, but as I hiked on there were long stretches of no one in sight.

Another reason a little rain is a good thing, it means that there will be flowing water for the waterfalls.  Sometimes waterfalls start to run a little low in the summer months, but there was plenty of gushing water during today’s hike.

Overcast days also make the colors in the glen pop.  Colors seem brighter and more vibrant when you place them next to a gray backdrop.  It’s a fun color theory thing.

As I was walking out of the gorge, I noticed a display that talked about an artist who used to live along the gorge (there’s all sorts of great information along the new entrance that just opened up to the park).  I plan on reading up a little more about him and will share what I find at another time.  As for now, it’s back to editing photos from today’s trip to find the perfect reference photos and maybe getting in a little painting before bedtime.
